Project MUSE - The Bamboo Grove Monastery and Popular Gynecology in Qing China. Late Imperial China 2. Over the past few decades, historians have thoroughly effaced the old icon which depicted . In its place stands a constantly changing landscape of medical practices and beliefs, shaped by healing experts and lay people alike, metamorphosing according to historical era and geographical location. Prior to the twentieth century, there were no legal or professional regulations to distinguish the physician from the neighborhood herbalist or educated medical hobbyist. An untrammeled free market of medical ideas existed, where no one group enjoyed a monopoly over medical knowledge or legitimacy. It is true that educated physicians strove to elevate their status by championing the ideal of the ruyi (literatus- doctor), a scholarly practitioner whose authority rested on his profound mastery of classical medical texts. These upper- class doctors disparaged other groups of healers as . Historians recognize, however, that such elite physicians constituted only a tiny percentage of all healers, and it is not at all certain that the average medical . Indeed, in the decentralized medical world of late imperial China, widespread confidence in amateur and popular medicine may have undermined ruyi claims to a privileged medical authority. Charlotte Furth's recent analysis of late Ming dynasty medical cases, for example, shows that patients and their families routinely challenged literati doctors' medical diagnoses and therapeutic strategies. The family home was the main arena in which healing activities took place, and here the judgments of male and female family members competed with those of scholarly doctors. Medical case records and literary accounts from the Ming and Qing all attest to the fact that sick people treated themselves, while also switching freely between different types of healers- -physicians, monks, diviners, herbalists- -when the expected cure was not forthcoming. As Furth observes, whether or not a doctor could make his views prevail ultimately depended on his ability to obtain the confidence of the household head. Then it should be thinned out of the grove.Despite the admonitions of elite ruyi, therefore, two phenomena continued to influence significantly the contours of late imperial healing practice: the enduring appeal of non- ruyi healers, and literate lay people's promotion of medical amateurship. These two dynamics intersect in the case of the Bamboo Grove Monastery of Xiaoshan County (Zhejiang Province), home to a famous lineage of medical monks. The monks were renowned as experts in fuke, the traditional Chinese counterpart of what we now call gynecology and obstetrics. Throughout the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, popular handbooks which claimed to reveal the monks' secret remedies circulated in all corners of the empire. The upper- class men who printed and distributed the monks' works praised them as handy guides which people without medical knowledge could use to treat even life- threatening illnesses at home. Dozens of different editions of Bamboo Grove Monastery texts still survive in Chinese libraries, and they constitute an important part of the traditional medical literature on women's illnesses. Xiaoshan County boosters claim the monks as famous local sons, and present- day descendants of the last monk (who . Twentieth- century Chinese scholars have chronicled the monastery's history, analyzed the filiation of its purported medical texts, and assessed the clinical utility of the formulas described therein. This paper is the first, however, to analyze the medical and social factors that contributed to the monastery's success and the popularity of its texts. Such a study is crucial to understanding why this particular form of..
